LATIN TRANSLATION CONTEST 2012-2013

The Classical Association of the Middle West and South offers $250 cash prizes, book awards, and letters of commendation to qualifying winners in its School Awards Latin Translation Contest.

This competition is open to advanced Latin students enrolled in secondary schools, or homeschooled, anywhere in the United States and Canada. Their teachers must be individual members of CAMWS, or their schools must be institutional members of CAMWS, or their school libraries must subscribe to the Classical Journal.

Following the annual alternation of Prose and Poetry, the 2012-2013 one-hour examination offered Latin Prose as exemplified by Caesar, Cicero et al. Contestants should translate as literally as possible without violating English idiom, and they should know the relevant vocabulary presented in Colby's Latin Word Lists (a copy of which is available upon request with registration). This examination is intended for students who have had at least three years of Latin, but is also open to superior second-year students. This examination must be administered by a school official other than the Latin teacher.

Writers of the ten most outstanding papers each receive a $250 cash prize. An additional twenty outstanding contestants receive a book prize relevant to classical antiquity. Writers of meritorious examinations receive letters of commendation.

All questions about this contest should be directed to the Chair of the Subcommittee on the School Awards, Robert White < white_r@shaker.org >

The recipients of this award are announced at the annual business meeting.
