CFP - Antiquity in Media Studies (AIMS) announces its first meeting, to be held via Zoom on Friday, December 11 & Saturday, December 12, 2020.

Antiquity in Media Studies (AIMS) is pleased to announce its first meeting, to be held via Zoom on Friday, December 11 & Saturday, December 12, 2020.

AIMS supports research, teaching, and outreach that illuminate how the remains of the ancient world and antiquity itself have been and continue to be mobilized in various media throughout modernity, around the world. AIMS grew out of the Classical Antiquity area of the annual Film & History conference, which has come to embrace the ancient Mediterranean world broadly; we hope that other global antiquities will be represented in the group as we grow. In lieu of the usual themed CFP associated with Film & History, and in recognition of the short preparation timeline, for this meeting we invite proposals on any topics related to the reception of antiquity in modern media, in the following formats:

·       Representing the ancient world on screen(s): 20-minute research presentations on the reception of the ancient world in any medium consumed through a screen. A mixture of formal papers and works-in-progress will be considered; please indicate one or the other in your proposal.

·       How you connect: 20-minute discussions or demonstrations of pedagogy, outreach, or public scholarship/engagement involving receptions of the ancient world and produced for online environments.

·       Critical discussions: 45-minute moderated roundtables or workshops on topics that people who work on representations of antiquity in media are talking about now, in academia and/or in engaging with non-academic audiences.

We will also hold an AIMS business meeting and social hours for meeting old and new friends.

Individual proposals and proposals for panels of three related presentations are both welcome. Please email a 300-500 word abstract (per applicant, in the case of panel proposals) as a Word or PDF attachment to <staims@antiquityinmediastudies.org>. Include the presenter’s name, email address, and time zone (for scheduling purposes) in the email body text. The deadline for proposals is November 13, 2020.

Notifications will go out to applicants the following week. There will be no registration fee for this meeting. We look forward to seeing you there!
