Eighty-Fourth Anniversary Meeting

The Eighty-Fourth Anniversary Meeting of the Southern Section of CAMWS will be held at the Adam’s Mark Winston Plaza (aka Adam’s Mark Winston-Salem) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, from Wednesday, November 3, through Saturday, November 6, at the invitation of Wake Forest University in cooperation with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Davidson College, and in conjunction with the North Carolina Classical Association.

Pre-Registration:  

All meeting participants must register, and all presenters must be members of CAMWS (www.camws.org).  Pre-registration is $50 ($60 on site).  Student and non-professional spouse pre-registration is $20 ($25 on site).  A Saturday-only rate of $15 is offered for local members or non-members who cannot get released time for the earlier portions of the meeting.

The Friday-night banquet will feature spanakopita salad, either prime rib of beef or grilled salmon or a vegetarian pasta entrée, and a pastry sampler.  The cost is $36 per person.  There will be a cash bar available prior to the banquet.  Reservations for the banquet must be made through pre-registration.

The Women's Classical Caucus is sponsoring a lunch on Friday, featuring a croissant club sandwich (ham, turkey, Swiss cheese, lettuce, and tomato, served with penne pasta and vegetable salad) or vegetarian plate, with tiramisu for dessert.  The lunch is being partially subsidized by WCC, with the cost to those attending set at $9 per person.  Reservations for the lunch must be made through pre-registration.

The North Carolina Classical Association is sponsoring a lunch on Saturday, featuring chicken salad with walnuts and grapes, served on a bed of lettuce with fresh fruit and a muffin, or vegetarian plate, with New York cheesecake with strawberry coulis for dessert.  The cost is $18 per person, and reservations must be made through pre-registration.

Registration forms must be sent to the Secretary-Treasurer by October 25.  Checks, payable to CAMWS-SS, should be in U.S. funds.

Hotel Information: 

The meeting will be held at the Adam’s Mark Winston Plaza at 425 North Cherry St. (www.adamsmark.com).  Rooms must be reserved by October 3.  After that date reservations will be processed based on the availability of rooms.  (N.B.  The hotel is in the process of renovation, so its full complement of rooms will not be available; therefore, observance of the deadline for reservations is essential.)  The convention rate for single or double accommodations is $79 plus tax (currently 13%) per night.  The triple or quad rate is $99 plus tax.  Reservations may be made by phoning the hotel toll-free 1-877-888-WSNC.  Be sure to mention the Classical Association of the Middle West and South when you make your reservation.

Friday Afternoon Sessions and Reception at Wake Forest University: 

Friday afternoon sessions will be held at Wake Forest University.  After the sessions of papers, there will be a reception sponsored by the University.

Receptions:  

On Wednesday, from 8:00 until 10:00 p.m., the North Carolina Classical Association and the National Latin Exam are sponsoring a welcoming cash-bar reception; and on Thursday, from 5:00 until 6:00 p.m., the Committee for the Promotion of Latin, National Latin Teacher Recruitment Week, Classical Bulletin, and HarperCollins Publishers are sponsoring a wine-and-cheese reception.

Other Highlights of the Program: 

A full schedule of papers on various literary, historical, and pedagogical topics is planned.  There will also be panels on “Recent Archaeological Research:  In the Field, the Museum, and the Library,” on the recent film Troy, on “Opera and the Ancient World,” on Horatian influence, and on Greek, Etruscan, Roman, and Celtic religions.  President Dyson's banquet address will be “Tactile Interface.”  The meeting will conclude on Saturday afternoon with performances of The Bacchae by students at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and Thesmophoriazousai by students at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Old Salem: 

Tickets are available at the reduced price of  $17 for Old Salem (www.oldsalem.org), the colonial Moravian village that contains 100 restored and reconstructed buildings.  Old Salem is connected to the hotel by a strollway that is a nice walk in good weather, and if there is inclement weather, it’s a short taxi ride away.  The ticket, which may be used on any one day between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday-Saturday, and 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, includes entrance to nine historic buildings, including the Single Brothers’ House, Vogler House, and T. Vogler Gunsmith Shop; and to the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Art, the Children’s Museum, and the Toy Museum.  The reduced-price tickets must be reserved through pre-registration. 

Travel to Winston-Salem:

Winston-Salem is served by Piedmont Triad International Airport (www.ptia.org); several major and connector airlines have flights to the airport.  Taxi and shuttle service to downtown Winston-Salem is available:  www.ptiairporttransportation.com.  The phone number is 1-877-796-5466.

From the Airport:  If you rent a car at the airport, take Highway 68 South to I-40 West to Winston-Salem.  When approaching Kernersville, I-40 splits. Take Business I-40 (right lanes: exit #206 Kernersville/Business 40) to downtown Winston-Salem.  Take Cherry Street exit.  Turn right onto Cherry Street (one-way).  The Adam’s Mark Winston Plaza is located four blocks north.

Directions from the West:  Take I-40 East to Business I-40 East.  Exit at Cherry Street.  The hotel is four blocks north.

Directions from the East:  Take Business I-40 (right lanes, exit #206 Kernersville/Business 40) to downtown Winston-Salem.  Take Cherry Street exit.  Turn right onto Cherry Street (one-way).  The hotel is four blocks north.

Directions from the North:  Take Rt. 52 South, exit at 5th Street to left on Marshall Street, left on 4th Street, left onto Cherry Street. The hotel is four blocks north.

Directions from the South:  Take I-85 North to Rt. 52 North to Business 40 West.  Exit at Cherry Street. The hotel is four blocks north.

Parking at the hotel is $6 per day.
