The Classical Association of the Middle West and South – Southern Section (CAMWS-SS) will hold its 88th Anniversary Meeting in Asheville, NC, November 13-15, 2008 at the invitation of the University of North Carolina-Asheville. All sessions will be held in the Doubletree Biltmore Hotel except those on Friday afternoon, which will take place on the University of North Carolina-Asheville campus.

Registrations must be received by October 1, 2008.  All registration fees go up after October 1, 2008.

Hotel Information:

The Doubletree Biltmore Hotel is located at 115 Hendersonville, Rd, Asheville, NC. 28803.  Our block of rooms is available for $89 (single or double) per night plus 4% Occupancy Tax and 6.75% NC Sales Tax. To ensure reservations at the agreed upon rate, individuals may call 1-800-222-TREE or 1-828-274-1800 and refer to Classical Assoc. of the Middle West & South Southern Section.  Please reserve your room by October 1st, 2008 to ensure the conventions rate.  Reservation requests received after October 1st, 2008, will be accepted on a space and rate availability basis.

The Doubletree Hotel Biltmore/Asheville in Asheville, North Carolina, is just a block from the entrance of the world-renowned Biltmore Estate Winery, and is also within walking distance of Biltmore Village, which features quaint shopping and a colorful assortment of dining. Downtown Asheville is also right around the corner, with the Blue Ridge Parkway, major interstates and the Asheville airport just down the road. Gaze out your window, and you’ll note stunning vistas of scenic Western North Carolina mountains, offering an abundance of outdoor recreational activities.

All 160 well appointed guest rooms provide a residential appeal and features free wireless internet service. Regional Airports in order of ease

Asheville: Asheville Regional Airport (AVL): 708 Airport Road, Fletcher, 28732.

By far the easiest option, and barely a half-hour drive from the hotel and city. However, it’s a small regional airport with relatively few direct flights and less than bargain prices. (Airlines - Continental, Delta, Northwest, US Airways.) Once you arrive at Asheville Regional Airport, Airport Ground Transportation is located in the baggage claim area. Greenville: Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP): 2000 Gsp Dr, Greer, SC 29651.

Greenville is just over an hour from Asheville, not a difficult drive and is a larger airport, so prices can be lower. It is always worth checking prices from Charlotte and Greenville against each other.  (Airlines - Allegiant Air, American Eagle, Continental Airlines, Delta, Northwest Airlines, United Express.)

Charlotte: Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT): 5501 Josh Birmingham Pkwy,  Charlotte, NC 28208.

The biggest airport in the area and usually the least expensive. Again, not a very difficult drive, since the airport is located to the west of the city and it’s possible to get to Asheville in about 2 hours. (Airlines - AirCanada, AirTran Airways, American Airlines/American Eagle/American Connection, Continental Airlines/Continental Express, Delta Air Lines/Delta Connection, JetBlue Airways, Lufthansa, Northwest Airlines/Northwest Jetlink, United Airlines/United Express, US Airways, US Airways Express.)

Knoxville: Mcghee Tyson Airport (TYS) 2055 Alcoa Hwy, Alcoa, TN 37701.

Knoxville is about 2 hours away from Asheville, but I-40 is winding through the mountains, prone to fog, and has truck drivers barreling along it, so it is not always for the faint of heart. Note also that a short stretch of I-40E from exit 388A-389 is currently closed. (Airlines - Allegiant Air, American Airlines/American Eagle, Continental Airlines, Delta, Northwest Airlines, United, US Airways.)

    1. Bear right onto US-129 N (TN-115 N, Airport Hwy, Alcoa Hwy)

    4. Merge onto TN-158W/James White Pkway via exit 388A towards James White Pkwy

Nota bene— Transportation will be provided from the hotel to campus for the Friday afternoon sessions.  If, however, you will need to bring your car to the University of North Carolina-Asheville on Friday, please indicate that on the Registration Form so that we can obtain parking passes and reserve the necessary spaces.

Travel to Asheville by Car:

Asheville is conveniently situated on Interstate 40 from W to E and on I-26 from the S and future I-26 from the N.
