He has provided funds which allow the Institute to host and support research events (conferences, workshops, study days, public lectures) and permitted us to send students to Greece on an annual basis. His work for the study of Greek language and culture at Waterloo and around the world has been foundational, inspirational, and transformational.

CAMWS Award for Special Service NOMINATION

I am writing to nominate Nick Aroutzidis for the CAMWS Special Service Award. Mr. Aroutzidis is a graduate of the University of Waterloo, where he completed undergraduate and graduate degrees (M.A. Sc.) in Civil Engineering (1985-92). Before coming to Waterloo to study Engineering, he also previously completed a degree in Applied Mathematics at the University of Western Ontario (1980-4).

Upon finishing his studies, Mr Aroutzidis founded NA Engineering Associates Inc., of which he has long served as President and Chief Executive Officer with great success. His firm has offices in several locations in southern Ontario and he has worked extensively with the nuclear power industry in the province. Despite the time-consuming demands of his professional activities, Mr Aroutzidis has also been extensively involved in philanthropy, serving his community with both his time and his financial support. To name a few instances of his community work, he was President of AHEPA (American Hellenic Education Progressive Association), President of the Stratford Rotary Club, member of the Board of Directors of the United Way Perth, and President of the Greek community in London Ontario.

In his philanthropic work, his Greek heritage has played an important role and he has proven himself to be an ardent supporter of education in Greek language and culture. As a prominent Greek Canadian, he won the 2011 CEGA Award for Civic Responsibility, for which occasion the following celebratory video, listing many of his philanthropic activities, was produced: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15Rx5Lzif1E

Mr.  Aroutzidis has remained close to the University of Waterloo and has been an influential supporter of the Waterloo Institute for Hellenistic Studies (a University of Waterloo research institute linked to the Department of Classical Studies) since its foundation in 2010. His financial support has allowed the Institute to flourish, providing

numerous and ongoing opportunities for faculty and students. He has provided funds which allow the Institute to host and support research events (conferences, workshops, study days, public lectures) and permitted the Department of Classical Studies to send students to Greece on an annual basis. Beyond his financial support of our endeavours, he has always been willing also to give of his time, regularly coming to events and meeting

with the students he has been able to help. His work on behalf of Classics at Waterloo has also been foundational in encouraging others to become involved, so that his impact has reached far beyond his individual contributions.

The students and faculty in Classical Studies at Waterloo, along with those from around the world who have participated in conferences and workshops hosted by the Waterloo Institute for Hellenistic Studies, have benefited greatly from Mr. Aroutzidis’ dedicated support and encouragement. A CAMWS Special Service Award would be a very fitting honour to recognize his contributions in this field.

Please let me know should you have any further questions.

Yours sincerely,

Andrew Faulkner

Director, Waterloo Institute for Hellenistic Studies
