Gary Meltzer


On December 31, 2011 GARY S. MELTZER of Wayne, PA. Born June 8, 1951 in Washington, DC, son of the late Louis G. and Nathalie Meltzer. He is survived by his wife, Jill Ross Meltzer, two daughters, Emily and Rebecca, his sister Dale Meltzer Stempler (David), his niece Lauren, and many other cherished family members and friends.

Gary earned a double Ph.D. in Classics and Comparative Literature from Yale University and had a long and distinguished academic career. He was Assistant Professor of Classics and Humanities at The George Washington University and Associate Professor of Classics at Eckerd College, where he held an endowed chair. He also served as Director of Graduate Classical Studies at Villanova University. Gary inspired countless students to study the classics and learn from the wisdom of the ancient philosophers. His book, Euripides and the Poetics of Nostalgia, was published by Cambridge University in 2006.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 6, at 2:00 p.m. at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA, with interment immediately following at King David Memorial Gardens.
