Recipients of 2018 CAMWS Excavation/Fieldwork Awards

 

Alex Lee (for the Peter Knox award)

Alex Lee is a PhD candidate in Classics at Florida State University, who will be ABD this summer; he is looking forward to commencing work on his dissertation, focusing on Xenophon in the intellectual context of late Classical Athens.  Alex’s application foregrounded his desire to bring an archaeological perspective into the classroom, as wel as open up his perspective on the field overall his letters describe a ‘brilliant, incredibly smart and hard-working student’; he is a yung Renaissance man; another ecommender notes that this award comes precisely at the point ot make a life time difference for Alex. We are happy to propose him as the recipient of the Peter Knox award. The award will enable his participation in the Cosa excavations, led by Andrea de Giorgi of Florida State University.

 

Devin Lawson

Devin Lawson is junior at Coe College, majoring in Mathematics with minors in both Classical Studies and in History. The CAMWS fellowship represents a significant factor in closing the gap between Coe’s resources and Devin’s academic goals: Devin is determined to achieve a PhD in Classics, with emphasis in Latin philology.  Angela Ziskowski is working closely with Devin to help her become competitive for graduate school: Dr. Ziskowski is also the director of the Archaeological field school at the Lechaion Harbor and Settlement project, which EFSA enables Devin to attend.  

 

Molly Schaub

Molly Schaub is completing her BA in Classics at the University of Michigan, and plans to go on to a graduate program in the field;  her letters were stellar, offering detailed accounts of Molly’s drive, her language skills, and her dedication to becoming a well-rounded scholar capable of independent research.  The CAMWS fellowship application will allow her to return to work at Gabii, to build on her first experience there in the excavation led by director Nicola Terrenato.

 

Caitlin Pallas

Caitlin Pallas is an undergraduate in Classics at the University of Georgia, Athens: here she is an enormously enthusiastic major in Classics, wit an emphasis in Latin: her immediate goal is to pair this emphasis with a certificate in Archaeology.  Her ultimate professional goal is a career in Classical archaeolgy. She has been extremely active in UGA’s Reacting to the Past Games, and has peer mentored for the department. She is an outstanding young scholar, as a presidential scholar at UGA. She Her financial situation makes it extremely difficult for her to attend this summer’s excavation: CAMWS’ support ensures that a model and energetic young scholar will have her first xperience in the field.  She will be spending her summer with the project
