Winiarski Special Service Award

2019 CAMWS Special Service Award

Mr. Warren Winiarski and Mrs. Barbara Winiarski

Mr. Warren Winiarski is an extremely successful vintner and entrepreneur, the founder of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. Mrs. Winiarski is an accomplished artist. Mr. and Mrs. Winiarski have lived much of their lives in the Napa Valley, where they were recently awarded the Acre by Acre award from the Land Trust of Napa County for their conservation efforts. Both have an academic background, first at St. John’s College and then the University of Chicago, where Mr. Winiarski studied with Leo Strauss before taking his M.A. and shifting his focus to winemaking.

Through their family foundation, they have recently very generously and meaningfully supported the study of Classics, through the creation of a challenge grant to match up to $50,000,000 in donations to St. John’s College for the study of the Classics. Mr. Winiarski has also taught as part of the St. John’s summer program.

The Winiarski Family Foundation has been generous to many other organizations, including the National Museum of American History and the University of California at Davis. For their generous support of the Classics, it is fitting for CAMWS to honour Mr. and Mrs. Winiarski with a Special Service Award.
