From the Latin/Greek Institute:
We write with very sad news. The conditor instituti et paterfamilias, Floyd Moreland, passed away this past Saturday. He had been in poor health for the past few years, but the news nonetheless came as a shock.
FLM was a genuine force of nature – passionate, driven, and brilliant. Creating the LGI was but one of many accomplishments in a life that was purposeful and well-lived. A truly remarkable individual.
There will be no funeral. This fall, we’ll put together an appropriate and fitting memorial and dedicate the 52nd summer of the Institute (which starts three weeks from today) to his memory. There’s a lot to process. For now, we wanted to share the news with the LGI community.
From a friend's post:
Dr. Floyd Moreland was instrumental in saving the 1910 Dentzel-Looff Carousel in Seaside Heights NJ which also bears his name sadly passed away. He was 82 years old, born in PASSAIC and graduated Passaic High School Class of 1960. He first rode the ride as a toddler at the Jersey Shore from Passaic every summer. He earned his doctorate degree at UC Berkeley California traveling cross country every summer to Seaside to run the carousel. He had a long career at the City University of New York where he was a classics professor, dean, VP of student affairs, and founder of the school's Latin/Greek Institute.
