Gregory J. Knittel

GREGORY JOSEPH KNITTEL, Ph.D. 'DOC', beloved husband of Catherine A. (nee Lanning); dearest father of Matthew A. (Erin), Mary Therese Cory (Michael) and Peter J.; son of Roger F. and Anna Mary (deceased); brother of Sr. Mary Jo, O.P, Thomas R. (Kathleen) and Patricia A. Cost (Frank); loving son and brother-in-law to the Lanning family; uncle and great-uncle to many. Greg graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1967, attended the college of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, and graduated from John Carroll University with an A.B. in Classics in 1971. He earned an M.A. in Classics from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1974, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Kent State University in 1991. He taught Latin and Greek at St. Ignatius High School for 35 years, where he founded the school's soccer program, and was an adjunct professor of Education at John Carroll University. He was inducted into St. Ignatius' Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991 and again in 2001. Greg was a colleague and friend to many wonderful teachers and administrators in his thirty five years in education. Greg will be remembered as a great friend, an inspiring teacher, a devoted coach, and a generous mentor. He died on February 5, 2013 at home after enduring ALS with patience, courage, and faith for six years. For his last lesson, Greg donated his body to the Cleveland Clinic Neurological Institute for research into the causes of and treatments for ALS. FRIENDS MAY CALL AT ST. A Memorial Mass will be at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, (East 9th St. and Superior Ave, Cleveland), SATURDAY, FEB. 16 at 1:00 p.m. (PLEASE NOTE DATES). Interment private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Knittel Family Scholarship at St. Ignatius High School.
